Getting Started
Who teaches Brighton Tactical classes?
Terry Young. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he learned to shoot the .45 ACP Model 1911, the M1 Garand rifle, and the .50 caliber machine gun, and he spent 15 years in law enforcement with the .357 revolver, the 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the 12 gauge shotgun, and the AR-15.
He has also taught CPR and First Aid, Community Emergency Response Team courses, and CERT Train the Trainer, and he served as a university professor. The goal in every class is safe and responsible firearms handling, competent shooting, and a day you actually enjoy.
Are you a verified CHP instructor?
Yes. Terry is a Verified Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor through the Adams County Sheriff's Office, which is the verification Colorado statute requires in order to teach CHP classes.
Verification by the sheriff of any Colorado county allows an instructor to teach CHP classes anywhere in the state, so a class taken with us supports an application in any county.
Is Brighton Tactical affiliated with the USCCA?
Terry is a USCCA member and Brighton Tactical is a USCCA Official Partner.
Do you offer notary services?
Yes, but separately. Terry is a Colorado Notary Public and a Certified Notary Trust Delivery Agent. Notary work is offered under FYA Mobile Notary, the other business operated by Forever Young Associates, LLC.
Use the same contact details on this site to ask about it.
Can you help me transfer or buy a firearm?
Yes. Terry is an FFL focused on private transfers of firearms, so if you are buying from or selling to another private party we can run the transfer for you.
If you already know what you want to purchase, he will also search online sources to find the best price he can and bring it in for you.
Contact us with what you have in mind and we will go from there.
Events
Where are classes held?
Classes are held primarily at indoor ranges in and around Brighton, Colorado. We also have access to outdoor ranges and to a range with covered shooting lanes and outdoor targets, so the location depends on the class and the weather.
You will get the exact location and directions when your class date is confirmed.
What areas do you serve, and how far will you travel?
We serve Western Adams County and Southeast Weld County, generally within about 25 to 30 miles of Brighton, Colorado.
That is a guideline rather than a hard boundary. If you are outside it, particularly for a private or group session, ask us anyway and we will see what we can do.
How do I sign up and pay for a class?
Contact us to get on the schedule. Email is the fastest way to reach us at terry@brightontactical.com, and you can also call or text (720) 334-7733.
Tell us which class you want and roughly when you are available, and we will confirm a date, the location, current pricing, and what to bring.
Can I book a private lesson or a class for my group?
Yes. Private lessons are available for individuals and for groups, and they are often the best option if you want to work on one specific thing, if you would rather not learn in front of a class, or if you want to put friends or family through a session together.
Tell us what you want to work on and we will build the session around it.
Courses
What is a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit, and which class do I need?
In Colorado, a concealed carry permit is called a Concealed Handgun Permit, or CHP. There are two required classes and which one you need depends on where you are in the process.
If you are applying for the first time, you need the initial class, which Colorado sets at a minimum of eight hours. If you already hold a permit and are renewing it, you need the refresher class, which is a minimum of two hours. We teach both.
How long are the CHP classes?
The initial Concealed Handgun Permit class is a minimum of eight hours, so plan on a full day. The refresher class required to renew an existing permit is a minimum of two hours.
Those are the state minimums, not a target to rush toward. We use the time it takes to make sure you leave able to handle a firearm safely and shoot competently.
I have never handled a firearm. Where do I start?
Start with Basics of Pistol Shooting, or with the Women's Handgun and Self Defense Fundamentals class if you would prefer a women only setting. Both are built for students who have never touched a firearm, and neither assumes any prior experience.
You do not need to take a permit class first, and you do not need to own a firearm to begin. If you are not sure which class fits, call or email and we will point you at the right one.
Does Colorado require training before I buy a semiautomatic firearm?
Colorado now requires safety training before the purchase of specified semiautomatic firearms, meaning firearms that are gas operated, semiautomatic, and use a detachable magazine. The course requirement is administered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
We teach both the Basic and the Extended Specified Semiautomatic Firearms Safety classes. Take the class before you go to the dealer, not after. If you are unsure which of the two applies to your situation, contact us and we will work it out with you.
Do you offer women only classes?
Yes. The Women's Handgun and Self Defense Fundamentals class is women only. It covers handgun fundamentals along with the awareness, avoidance, and planning side of personal defense, and it is paced to leave room for questions.
Most students in it have never handled a handgun before, which is exactly what the class is designed for.
